FRASER VALLEY REAL ESTATE BOARD DONATES $10,000 TO YWCA HOUSING FOR SINGLE MOMS

Release: November, 25, 2010
(Vancouver, BC): YWCA Vancouver is pleased to announce a donation of $10,000 from the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board (FVREB) in support of our new housing development for single mothers in Surrey.

In partnership with the City of Surrey and BC Housing, Alder Gardens will encompass 36 units that will cater to single mothers and their children with priority given to Surrey residents.

“Thanks to the generous support from Fraser Valley REALTORS®, we are that much closer to reaching our goal of raising $1 million dollars towards our capital campaign,” said Bobbi Sarai, YWCA’s Fund Development Manager.

“Every donation makes a difference however, significant contributions like this one, along with the tremendous support from the Surrey Homelessness and Housing Society, ensure we’ll reach our goal faster to help families who need it most, sooner.”

Deanna Horn, president of the FVREB, said it is a natural fit because REALTORS® understand the value of the pride of home ownership and the importance of belonging to a caring community. “As part of our Quality of Life philosophy, REALTORS® take their responsibility to build thriving communities very seriously, in particular helping vulnerable families achieve the dream of a clean, safe, affordable home.”

As a YWCA supportive housing model, Alder Gardens will offer a pro-rated, income-based rent system whereby residents pay no more than 30 per cent of their income. In addition, the women will receive comprehensive support services including an on-site Community Development Worker and referrals to local programs for children, youth and families – tools and resources single mothers need to build their economic independence and prevent future homelessness or at-risk of homelessness.

YWCA Vancouver is a registered charity, providing a range of integrated services for women and their families, and those seeking to improve the quality of their lives. From early learning and care to housing, health and fitness, employment services and leadership, YWCA Vancouver touches lives in communities throughout Metro Vancouver.
